What movers won't move, and what they hate to move
By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026
Most movers won't take anything flammable or explosive, perishable food, plants on a long hot haul, pets, or your cash, jewelry and documents. The heavy, awkward pieces movers dread, like pianos, safes and hot tubs, are a different list: those move fine with the right crew and a heads-up.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen, and piano and safe moving is one of our services. So this guide splits the question in two: what you should keep off any moving truck, and the hard pieces that just need planning.
What most movers won't put on the truck
Every mover sets its own list, so ask yours. These are the items most crews refuse, and the reasons are practical: a closed truck in a Texas summer gets hot, and loads shift.
| Item | Why | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline, propane tanks, lighter fluid, paint thinner, fireworks | Flammable or explosive in a hot, closed truck | Use up, give away or dispose of them before move day |
| Pool chemicals, bleach, open cleaning products | Can leak, react or corrode | Move them yourself in a sealed bin, or replace them |
| Perishable and open food | Spoils and draws pests | Eat down the pantry; move the rest in a cooler |
| Plants | Heat and darkness inside the truck | On a short move, take them in your car |
| Pets | Not cargo | Move them yourself, with water |
| Cash, jewelry, passports, documents, medications, keys | Hard or impossible to replace | Carry them in a bag that stays with you |
Gas tanks on mowers and grills
Drain the fuel from mowers, trimmers and generators, and disconnect the propane tank from a grill, before the crew arrives. Most movers will take the equipment once it is empty.
Can movers move plants?
Some will on a short local move, and many won't take them on a long haul. Plants don't do well in a closed truck in the heat. For a move across town, your own car is usually the better ride.
What movers hate to move
These are the pieces that are heavy, awkward or easy to damage. None of them is a reason to skip the mover. They're a reason to mention them when you ask for an estimate, because they change the crew, the equipment and the time.
- Pianos. Heavy, top-heavy and easy to knock out of tune. Piano and safe moving is one of our services; see piano and safe movers.
- Safes. Dense weight in a small footprint, hard on stairs and floors.
- Hot tubs. Big, heavy and often far from the driveway. One customer wrote that the crew "moved my hot tub to the patio, & took care of all paintings I needed to hang" (Anthony P., Google review, a year ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Ask before you assume any mover will take one.
- Gym equipment. Treadmills and cardio machines are heavy and have fragile electronics. A business customer trusted us with "fragile cardio equipment" on a commercial move (Kim S., Google review, 2 years ago as of Oct 15, 2026).
- Glass tabletops, mirrors and art. They need crating, corners or extra padding.
- Anything up a lot of stairs. "Moved from a 4th floor, 3BR apartment and the guys were quick and efficient" (Amber H., Google review, a year ago as of Oct 15, 2026).
- Antiques. Old joints and finishes. We've delivered "a desk I purchased at an antique mall" for one customer (Sara V., Google review, a year ago as of Oct 15, 2026).
Tell the mover about heavy and valuable items up front
In Texas, the written proposal must list the items and services, and anything added later can cost more (43 TAC §218.56(a)(3)). It also has to state the mover's liability, if any, for loss or damage (§218.56(a)(5)). If a piece is worth a lot, settle the liability before loading, not after. Our Texas moving rules guide explains how that works and why 60 cents per pound is not a Texas default.
What to mention when you call
Pianos, safes, hot tubs, gym equipment, oversized furniture, glass, and every flight of stairs at both ends. The more the estimate knows, the fewer surprises on move day.

Won't-move questions
What will movers not move?
Most movers refuse flammable and explosive items (gasoline, propane, paint thinner, fireworks), corrosive chemicals, perishable food, pets, and often plants on long moves. Keep cash, jewelry, documents, medications and keys with you. Ask your mover for its own list.
Can movers move plants?
Some will on a short local move; many won't on a long haul because of heat inside a closed truck. On a move across town, taking plants in your own car is usually safer.
What do movers hate to move the most?
Pianos, safes, hot tubs, gym equipment, glass and anything going up several flights of stairs. They are moveable with the right crew and equipment, so mention them when you ask for an estimate.
Will movers move a grill or lawn mower?
Usually, once the fuel is drained and the propane tank is disconnected. Fuel and full tanks are what movers turn away.
