Do you need to empty dressers for movers?

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

Often not completely. Light, soft things like folded clothes can usually stay in a sturdy dresser if the drawers are wrapped shut. Take out anything heavy, fragile, valuable, liquid or loose, and empty antique or particleboard pieces entirely. Ask your mover first, because some prefer every drawer empty.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen, and our crew pads and wraps furniture before it goes on the truck. Whether the drawers stay full is worth settling before move day. Here is how to decide, drawer by drawer, so the crew can carry the piece safely and nothing inside gets broken or lost.

The short rule: weight and fragility come out

A full dresser can weigh far more than an empty one, and that weight sits on drawer runners and joints that were built to slide, not to be carried on end down a staircase. Soft, light things add little weight and nothing breaks. Hard, heavy or loose things shift, crack and push drawers open.

So the test for each drawer is simple: would it hurt the dresser, or break, if the piece were tipped on its side?

When in doubt, ask your mover before move day.
Usually fine to leave inTake out and pack separately
Folded clothes, socks, T-shirtsBooks, paper files, tools, anything heavy
Linens and towelsGlass, perfume, picture frames, anything fragile
Soft items in a solid-wood dresserLiquids, lotions, anything that can leak
Light items in drawers that close tightlyJewelry, cash, documents, medications, keys
Everything, if the dresser is antique, wobbly or particleboard

How a crew keeps drawers shut

Drawers that are left full get wrapped closed so they can't slide out in the truck, then the whole piece is padded. Customers describe it in their own words: "Everything was wrapped with blankets or cellophane" (Sharla H., Google review, 4 years ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Don't tape drawers shut yourself with packing tape on a finished surface; tape can pull off the finish when it comes off. Leave that to the wrap.

Valuables ride with you

Jewelry, cash, passports, birth certificates, medications, car and house keys, and anything you can't replace go in a bag you carry, not in a drawer on the truck.

Other furniture with drawers

  • Nightstands: same test as a dresser. Chargers, books and bottles come out.
  • Desks: empty them. Paper is heavy, and desk drawers are usually lighter-built than dresser drawers.
  • Filing cabinets: empty them, or ask your mover whether it will move a loaded one at all.
  • Tool chests: empty or lock the drawers, and tell the mover the weight.
  • Armoires and wardrobes: hanging clothes can often stay; shelves of folded items too, if they're light.

Why it matters if something breaks

In Texas, what the mover pays for damage is whatever liability you agreed to, and the proposal must state it, even if it is $0 (43 TAC §218.56(a)(5)). A cracked perfume bottle in a drawer can turn into a stained dresser and a claim. Packing fragile drawer contents separately keeps both safer. The Texas moving rules guide explains liability and the 60 cents per pound myth.

What to empty before the movers arrive

  • Fragile, heavy and liquid items out of every drawer.
  • Valuables and documents into the bag you carry.
  • Shelves and tabletops cleared, so the crew can wrap furniture straight away.
  • Fridge and freezer emptied, if they are moving.
  • Beds stripped, if the crew is taking them apart.

If you would rather not pack at all, our packing and unpacking service covers it. One customer wrote that the crew "packed, wrapped and got all of my large furniture out all while protecting my floors and walls" (Jacqueline C., Google review, 3 years ago as of Oct 15, 2026).

Dresser and drawer questions

Not always. Light, soft items such as folded clothes can usually stay in a sturdy dresser if the drawers are wrapped shut. Take out anything heavy, fragile, valuable, liquid or loose, and empty antique or particleboard dressers completely. Ask your mover first.

Yes. Paper and office supplies are heavy, and desk drawers are usually lighter-built than dresser drawers. Box the contents and label them.

Most full-service movers pad or stretch-wrap large furniture. A customer of ours put it this way: "Everything was wrapped with blankets or cellophane" (Sharla H., Google review, 4 years ago as of Oct 15, 2026).

The mover pays up to the liability stated in your proposal, which Texas requires the mover to disclose, even if it is $0 (43 TAC §218.56(a)(5)). Pack fragile items separately and read the liability line before loading.
