How far ahead should you book movers?
By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026
Book as soon as your date is firm. Summer weekends and the last days of the month fill first, so those need the most lead time; a midweek date in the middle of the month needs the least. And if the plan breaks, a same-day crew is the fallback.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen that takes both planned moves and last-minute ones. The honest answer to "how far ahead" depends less on a magic number of weeks and more on which date you need.
The dates that fill first
Three things crowd the calendar: weekends, the turn of the month when leases end and start, and the busy season. In our October 2026 review of moving-company ads, large movers ran their pushes from April through October, with one starting 24 of its 25 active ads between August 17 and 20, right at the late-summer lease turnover. If your date sits in any of those, book the moment you know it.
| Your date | How early to book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend, end of month, summer | As soon as the date is firm | Every crowding factor at once |
| Weekend or month-end, off-season | Early, a few weeks out if you can | Weekends and lease turnover still fill |
| Midweek, mid-month | Least lead time | The quietest slots on the calendar |
| Long-distance in Texas | Earlier than a local move | A longer day ties up a truck and crew |
| Tomorrow or today | Call now | Same-day crews exist; availability varies |
Work back from your lease or closing
If you rent month to month, Texas law requires at least one month's notice unless your lease says otherwise in writing (Property Code §91.001). Check your lease for its own notice period, then book the mover for a date inside that window. For a home purchase, the closing date drives everything; leave a cushion, because closings slip. Our guide to a delayed closing or a lease ending early covers what to do if they don't line up.
What to have ready when you call
Both addresses, stairs or elevators at each end, the rough size of the move (rooms or a list of big pieces), anything heavy like a piano or safe, and the date plus a backup date.
Get the proposal early too
Booking early is also time to read the paperwork. Before loading, a Texas mover must give you a written proposal with the maximum price, marked binding or not-to-exceed, and the TxDMV brochure "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in Texas" (43 TAC §§218.55, 218.56). Ask for it well before move day, so you are not reading it on the driveway. The Texas moving rules guide walks through what it must say.
When the plan breaks
Movers cancel, closings move, and leases end before the next place is ready. Same-day and last-minute moves are one of our services. Two recent customers put it plainly: "They came through for me when other movers bailed, even with short notice on their off day" (Jessica M., Google review, 3 days ago as of Oct 15, 2026), and "I reached out needing movers the very same day, and they came through" (Dominic N., Google review, 4 days ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Whether a crew is free on a given day depends on the schedule, so call and ask. Start with same-day movers in Allen.

Booking questions
How far in advance should I book movers?
As soon as your date is firm. Summer weekends and the last days of the month fill first and need the most lead time. A midweek date in the middle of the month needs the least.
When is too late to book movers?
Not even the day of the move, necessarily. Same-day crews exist, though availability varies. Call and ask, with your addresses and a rough list of what is moving.
How early should I book long-distance movers?
Earlier than a local move. A long-distance day ties up a truck and crew for longer, so those dates fill sooner, especially in summer.
How much notice do I have to give my landlord in Texas?
For a month-to-month lease, at least one month unless your lease says otherwise in writing (Texas Property Code §91.001). Check your own lease for its notice period.
