Closing delayed or lease ending early? Your moving-day options

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

When the closing slips or the lease runs out first, you have four moves: ask for more time where you are, move twice through a short-term place, push the moving date, or keep a same-day crew in reserve for when the new date firms up.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen, and short-notice moves are one of our services. "The closing was delayed" and "the lease was up a month before the house was ready" are timing problems, so this guide is about timing.

Option 1: ask for more time where you are

If you rent, ask the landlord for a short extension or a month-to-month arrangement before your notice runs out, and get it in writing. For a month-to-month lease, Texas law sets at least one month's notice unless the lease says otherwise in writing (Property Code §91.001). Your own lease may set a different notice period, so read it first. If you are selling, ask your real estate agent what your contract allows before you agree to anything.

Option 2: move twice

Move into a short-term rental, a furnished place or family's spare room, then move again when the house is ready. It costs two moves, but each one can be smaller. Take only what you need for the gap on the first move, and plan the second as the main move. We move your things from door to door; we don't hold them between moves, so any gap has to be covered by where you stay.

Split the load

On the first move, pack a "gap" set: clothes, work gear, kitchen basics, kids' things and documents. Label everything else clearly for the final move, so nobody unpacks it twice.

Option 3: push the moving date

If the new date is clear, call your mover as soon as you know. Ask how its reschedule policy works, and get the answer in writing; policies vary from mover to mover. A new date means a new look at the paperwork too: the written proposal with the maximum price has to be in hand before loading, whatever the date (43 TAC §218.56).

Option 4: keep a same-day crew in reserve

Sometimes the closing date isn't known until the last minute. Same-day and last-minute moves are one of our services, and customers describe it in their own words: "I reached out needing movers the very same day, and they came through" (Dominic N., Google review, 4 days ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Whether a crew is free depends on the schedule, so call and ask. See same-day movers in Allen.

Which option fits

Before any move, the paperwork is the same

Delayed or not, a Texas mover must give you a written proposal with the maximum price, marked binding or not-to-exceed, and the TxDMV brochure before loading (43 TAC §§218.55, 218.56). The Texas moving rules guide covers what it must say. For booking lead time, see how far ahead to book movers.

Delayed closing questions

Either stay put longer (ask your landlord or check what your contract allows), move twice through a short-term place, or push the moving date. If the new date firms up at the last minute, a same-day crew can cover it.

Ask the landlord for a short extension or month-to-month terms in writing, or move into short-term housing and move again later with a smaller first load.

For a month-to-month lease, at least one month unless the lease says otherwise in writing (Texas Property Code §91.001). Check your own lease.

You can move out of where you live now whenever your lease or sale contract allows. Ask your real estate agent what your contract says before you plan around it.
