What is the cheapest day to hire movers?

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

Usually a weekday in the middle of the month, outside late spring and summer. Weekends, the last and first days of the month, and lease-turnover weeks are when demand for crews peaks.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen. This guide covers what the calendar does to demand for movers, and what moves the price more than the date: the size of the job and how much of it you can do before the crew arrives.

Weekday vs weekend

Weekends are when most people can take time off, so they fill first. Market estimates in Google's AI Overview for moving costs in our area put weekend moves at roughly 10 to 25% more than weekdays (captured Oct 2026; treat it as a general market figure, since it moves). Midweek dates are usually the easiest to book with the start time you want.

Middle of the month vs the first and last days

Leases tend to end and start at the turn of the month, so the last few days of one month and the first few of the next are crowded. If you rent, Texas law sets at least one month's notice for a month-to-month lease unless your lease says otherwise in writing (Property Code §91.001). Giving notice early enough to pick a mid-month date is one of the few scheduling moves you control.

Which months are busiest

Advertising is a good tell for demand. In our October 2026 review of moving-company ads, one large competitor refreshed its ads roughly monthly from April through October, and another started 24 of its 25 active ads between August 17 and 20, right at the late-summer lease turnover. Movers spend when customers are booking. Our review only shows ads running at the time, so it can't tell you about winter; ask about dates outside the April to October window when you call.

What moves the price more than the date

The day of the week is only one estimate factor. The others usually matter more:

  • Crew size and any hourly minimum.
  • Travel and truck time, and fuel charges where a mover adds them.
  • Access at both ends: stairs, elevators, and the distance from the door to the truck.
  • Packing materials, if the crew packs for you.
  • Anything added before loading that wasn't on the proposal.

Whatever day you pick, a Texas mover has to put the maximum price in writing before loading, marked binding or not-to-exceed (43 TAC §218.56). Compare proposals on that number, not on an hourly rate alone. Our Texas moving rules guide explains both types.

Cut the hours, not just the rate

Have boxes packed, taped and labeled, beds stripped and small items off the furniture before the crew arrives. On an hourly move, that prep often saves more than switching days would.

When the cheapest day isn't an option

Closings slip and movers cancel. Same-day and last-minute moves are part of what we do. One customer wrote that we "came through for me when other movers bailed, even with short notice on their off day" (Jessica M., Google review, 3 days ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Cheapest day questions

Usually a midweek day. Weekends fill first, and market estimates for our area put weekend moves at roughly 10 to 25% more than weekdays (Google AI Overview, captured Oct 2026).

Outside April through October, when large movers concentrate their ad spending, and away from the late-summer lease turnover in mid to late August. Within any month, a midweek date in the middle of the month is the safest pick.

Often not. Leases end and start at the turn of the month, so those days are crowded. If you can, give your lease notice early and pick a date in the middle of the month.

No. On any day, the mover must give you a written proposal with the maximum price before loading, marked binding or not-to-exceed (43 TAC §218.56).
