Allen apartment move-in rules: elevators, insurance certificates and move hours

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

Most of the rules for an Allen apartment move come from your property, not the city: elevator reservations, a certificate of insurance from the mover, and set move hours. The city adds one: a moving truck on an Allen street may stand only while loading, and never after dark.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen, and apartment moves are one of our core services. An apartment move has three sets of rules: your lease and the property's move policy, Allen's street rules for the truck, and the Texas rules for the mover. This guide takes them in that order.

Rules your apartment community sets

Allen apartment communities write their own move policies, and they differ from one property to the next. We can't tell you what yours says, but we can tell you what to ask. Get the answers from the leasing office in writing, then send them to your mover.

Questions to ask. Rules vary by property.
Ask the leasing officeWhy it matters on move day
Do I need to reserve the elevator, and for which hours?Without a reservation, the crew may share the elevator or wait for it, which adds time.
Does the elevator need pads or a key?Someone has to have the key or pads in place before the crew starts.
Which hours and days are moves allowed? The crew's start time has to fit inside them, with time to finish.
Does the mover need to send a certificate of insurance? Some properties won't let a crew in without one on file.
Where can the truck load?A loading area close to the door shortens the carry, and the carry affects the price.
Are there rules for common areas, like hallway protection? The crew can plan floor runners and door pads.

Certificate of insurance (COI)

A COI is a document from the mover's insurer that a property may ask for before move day, sometimes with the property named on it. Ask the office for its exact requirements and wording, and pass them to your mover as early as you can.

Where the truck parks at your complex

Ask the leasing office where the truck can park on the property. If it has to stand on a public street instead, Allen Code §9-227 limits it to loading and unloading and keeps it off the street after dark. The details are on our Allen move-day rules page.

Plan for daylight

On a short winter day, a morning start matters more. If the move might run long, plan the street loading for daylight and leave anything that can wait for the next day.

Stairs and no elevator

Without an elevator, stairs become one of the biggest price factors in an apartment move, along with the distance from the door to the truck. Customers have written about it: "Moved from a 4th floor, 3BR apartment and the guys were quick and efficient" (Amber H., Google review, a year ago as of Oct 15, 2026), and a move from a second floor to a third floor (Rickey C., Google review, a year ago as of Oct 15, 2026). Tell your mover the floor at both ends, and whether there is an elevator, so the proposal reflects it.

Lease timing

For a month-to-month lease, Texas law requires at least one month's notice unless the lease says otherwise in writing (Property Code §91.001). Most apartment leases set their own notice period, so read yours. Then pick a move date that sits inside your lease and the property's move hours, and book the elevator for that date.

What the mover owes you in Texas

Whatever your property requires, a Texas mover must give you a written proposal before loading with the maximum price, marked binding or not-to-exceed, plus the TxDMV brochure "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in Texas" (43 TAC §§218.55, 218.56). Pay the maximum on the contract and the mover must release your goods (§218.57(b)). The Texas moving rules guide has the detail.

Allen apartment move checklist

  • Read your lease notice period, and give notice in writing.
  • Get the property's move policy: hours, elevator, COI, loading area.
  • Reserve the elevator at both buildings, if both have one.
  • Send the COI request and wording to your mover early.
  • Tell the mover the floor and the walk to the truck at both ends.
  • Pick a start time that leaves daylight if the truck will load on the street.
  • Get the written proposal and the TxDMV brochure before move day.

Allen apartment move questions

It depends on the property. Common requirements are an elevator reservation, set move hours, a certificate of insurance from the mover and a designated loading area. Ask your Allen leasing office for its move policy in writing and share it with your mover.

Many buildings with elevators ask for a reservation. Ask the leasing office at both your old and new Allen apartments, and book the elevator for the hours the crew will be there.

Only while it is loading or unloading, and never from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. That is Allen Code §9-227, and it has no loading exception at night.

A document from the mover's insurer that some Allen properties require before the crew can work on site. Get the property's exact requirements and wording, and send them to your mover well before move day.

Whatever your lease says. For a month-to-month lease with no written term on notice, Texas law requires at least one month (Property Code §91.001).
