PODS vs movers: which is cheaper?

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

A portable moving container is often cheaper if you pack and load it yourself and you have time on both ends. Full-service movers cost more because a crew does the lifting, driving and unloading. The middle option, renting the container or truck and hiring a crew only to load and unload, is the one most people overlook.

Champion Moving is a moving company in Allen. We don't rent containers, but we do load and unload them for people who choose one. This guide compares the options honestly, without a price list, because the right answer depends on your move. For every option, from friends with a borrowed truck to full service, see the cheapest way to move.

Container vs full-service movers at a glance

Which is cheaper depends on the factors below.

Portable containerYouThe container companyFlexible timing, time to load at your own pace
Container or truck + hired loading crewA crew loads and unloads; you can packThe container company, or youHeavy furniture, tight timelines, a lower bill than full service

What a container costs you besides the rental

The container price is only part of it. Count the time you spend packing and loading, any helpers you pay or feed, and how long the container sits at each end. Ask where it will be placed, too. HOA and local rules for driveways and streets vary, so check yours before delivery day.

Containers also don't carry themselves up stairs. Heavy pieces such as dressers, sofas, appliances and anything awkward still need people who know how to lift and pad them.

The middle option

Hire a crew just for the heavy part. Our loading and unloading help is for exactly that: you rent the container or truck, and our crew pads and loads it, then unloads at the other end if you need it.

What full-service movers cost you

A moving quote is built from a handful of factors: crew size and any hourly minimum, travel and truck time, fuel where a mover charges it, packing materials, stairs and elevators, and the day of the week. You pay for the crew's time, but you get your own time back, and the crew carries the risk of the lift.

In Texas, a mover must give you a written proposal with the maximum price before loading, marked binding or not-to-exceed (43 TAC §218.56). That makes comparing a mover against a container easier: you have a ceiling to compare against. Our Texas moving rules guide explains it.

When each option wins

  • A container usually wins when you have days to pack and load, a driveway it can sit in, and mostly boxes and light furniture.
  • Hired loading help wins when you want the container price but have heavy pieces, stairs or a short window to load.
  • Full-service movers win when the home is large, the timeline is tight, or nobody in the house should be lifting a dresser down a staircase.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • How long can the container stay at each end, and what happens if the closing slips?
  • Where will it be placed, and does my HOA or property allow that?
  • Who loads it, and who pays if something shifts and breaks?
  • For movers: what is the maximum price in writing, and what is the liability for damage (§218.56(a)(5))?
