What is the cheapest way to move?

By the Champion Moving team · Last updated October 16, 2026

In cash, the cheapest move is friends and a borrowed truck. In total cost, counting time, injuries and broken furniture, it is often a rental truck or container with a hired crew for just the loading and unloading. Full service costs the most and asks the least of you.

Who will help me move for free?

Friends and family, mostly, in exchange for pizza and a favor owed. It works for a small apartment with no stairs. It gets risky with a full house: heavy pieces on stairs are where people get hurt and walls get gouged, and nobody is liable when a friend drops the dresser. If you go this way, borrow or rent dollies, moving blankets and straps, and keep the heaviest items for people who have done it before.

What is the most expensive part of moving?

On an hourly move, it is usually the crew's time, which is why prep matters so much. Next come travel time and fuel charges, packing materials if the crew packs, and extra time for stairs, elevators and long walks to the truck. Posts about other movers describe how it adds up: a "flat 14% fuel charge," a "$139 travel time charge," crews that "milked the clock," and movers who "nickel and dime" on the final bill.

The cheapest protection is a written maximum

In Texas, a mover must give you a written proposal with the maximum price before loading, marked binding or not-to-exceed (43 TAC §218.56). Compare quotes on that number. It is the line that stops a cheap hourly rate turning into an expensive day. See the Texas moving rules guide.

Ways to cut the bill on any option

  • Move less. Sell, donate or toss before you pack. Every box costs time.
  • Pack yourself, and label every box by room.
  • Pick a midweek, mid-month date. See the cheapest day to hire movers.
  • Give the mover a full list, including the garage and patio, so the proposal is right.
  • Clear the path: furniture emptied of fragile items, beds stripped, parking for the truck close to the door.
  • Ask how time, travel and fuel are counted, and get it in the proposal.

Rental truck plus hired loading help

Rent the truck or container, pack it yourself, and hire a crew only for the heavy lifting. Our loading and unloading help is built for that: the crew pads and loads the furniture, and unloads it at the other end if you want. Comparing a container with movers? Read PODS vs movers. Cheapest move questions

In cash, friends and a borrowed truck. In total cost, a rental truck or container with a hired crew for the loading and unloading is often the better deal, because it saves your time and protects the heavy furniture.

On an hourly move, usually the crew's time, followed by travel time, fuel charges, packing materials and extra time for stairs and long carries. Prep and an accurate item list cut it down.

Usually friends and family. It works for small moves without stairs. For heavy pieces, consider hiring a crew just for loading and unloading.

Get the written proposal with the maximum price before loading (43 TAC §218.56), give the mover a full item list, and ask how time, travel and fuel are counted.
